Ferry flight in photos: Shuttle Endeavour's cross-country journey

September 19, 2012

— Space shuttle Endeavour, mounted atop NASA's Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, a modified Boeing 747 jumbo jet, took off on the final ferry flight of the space shuttle program era on Wednesday (Sept. 19) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Destined for display at the California Science Center (CSC), Endeavour is slated to arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Friday (Sept. 21), where it will be readied for a 12 mile (19 kilometer) road trip through city streets to its new exhibit pavilion.

On its way to the West Coast, Endeavour, atop the SCA, is scheduled to fly over several NASA facilities and local landmarks, as well as make stops at Houston's Ellington Field, Biggs Army Air Field in El Paso, Texas and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California.

collectSPACE staff members and readers, spread across the country, are photo documenting Endeavour's final flight. This gallery will be updated as its ferry flight proceeds and is completed.
