This sterling silver lapel pin in the shape of a spacesuited Snoopy was one of 100 that flew aboard Columbia on its last successful mission before the orbiter was lost in Feb. 2003. Intended as an award, the Silver Snoopy is given by astronauts to space workers for outstanding performance, contributing to flight safety and mission success. The first set of Snoopys flew on Apollo 7 after the Apollo 1 fire left NASA looking for a way to incentivize workers who would have no direct contact with astronauts. The pin's design is based on a drawing by Peanuts® creator Charles Schulz. Fewer than one percent of the NASA workforce is awarded the Silver Snoopy annually.
